Hello, and a personal communication from Malcolm Fraser,
I wanted to share some thoughts on my new role as ‘Chief Empowering Officer’ (CEO) and update you on some important changes that will be happening over the next couple of weeks.
Since leaving corporate life in 2002 to help start-ups succeed internationally, it has been my pleasure to work with some wonderful entrepreneurs in over 30 countries, firstly with Agitavi Research, and now with the International Institute for Software Economics, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IISEIE).
Over this decade there have many conversations about the future of business, and I have also been doing a considerable amount of research and thinking about national competitiveness, economic growth, social development and hi-technology. At IISEIE, we have also been focusing on building ‘hubs of innovation’ that included working with Incubators and Innovation Centres, as well as local and global stakeholders, to support start-ups and industry development.
With this decade of experiences, research and thinking we have all arrived at the perspective that cities are the powerhouses of 21st century economies, and that these cities thrive when people and urban communities have belief in their future and the means to archive it.
In particular, research is now showing that the world is making a transition from the 20th century paradigms of ‘productivity and planning’ to the paradigms of ‘flexibility and entrepreneurialism’ where city (urban) based innovation development and entrepreneurship will generate national outcomes, and have a significant impact on the global competiveness of countries.
It’s now all about Empowering Local Communities in a Digital Age!!
At IISEIE, the team has been doing a lot of work, and our vision is to build people’s belief in the future by:
• Envision: Researching the issues, facilitate the vision and define the mission.
• Enable: Developing collaborative relationships to execute program portfolios.
• Empower: Developing freedom of choice, participation and action for all stakeholders
• Energise: Leading and energising people to action through example and communication.
Therefore, over the next month IISEIE will be making a name change to The Future Cities Institute.
As an independent international organisation, the Future Cities Institute will continue to undertake collaborative programs, incubators and innovation centre support, economic research and stakeholder advocacy, with a renewed focus on the city setting. Within this context and vision, it seems only right that my Chief Executive Officer role of the 20th century is replaced by a Chief Empowering Officer role for the 21st century.
Personally, I am really excited about this focus, and as I am almost at the half century mark, it seems like a great pathway on which to explore the next 50 years!!
I look forward to continuing to work with my friends and colleges from around the world and would like to personally invite you to be part of the conversation over the coming months and years ahead.
Warmest Regards
Malcolm
Chief Empowering Officer, The Future Cities Institute
